What is Pilates?
Joseph Pilates stated that:
“Pilates exercise focuses on, postural symmetry, breath control, abdominal strength, spine, pelvis and shoulder stabilization, muscle flexibility, joint mobility and strength through the complete range of motion of all joints instead of isolating muscle groups, the whole body is trained or retrained by integrating the upper and lower extremities with the trunk.”
The Pilates method has progressed to a physical and mental conditioning exercise regime, using clearly defined movement patterns. The emphasis is on quality of movement and not quantity/volume of repetitions. The movements or exercises undertaken follow a defined, precise sequence that incorporates a particular breathing pattern linked to the controlled exercise.
